Robber, attempted rapist locked up for 20 years

ALEXANDRA – Robber who returned to try rape victim, sentenced to 20 years.

An Alex man charged with robbery and attempted rape was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

Silas Mampane, in his 30s, was sentenced to 15 years for aggravated robbery and 10 years for attempted rape, which the court commuted to a concurrent 20-year sentence.

He was arrested in the early hours of 10 September at an 8th Avenue residence where he and two accomplices, who are at large, robbed a couple at gunpoint of R500 in cash, a TV set and two cellphones.

Mampane returned with a gun after his accomplices had left, and ordered the female to undress, which she did but slowly. Frustrated by her slowness, Mampane held the gun in his mouth while he forcibly undressed her, ordered her to kneel and switched on his cellphone light to see her. Just then, the boyfriend tackled him and, as they fought, the gun fell out of the Mampane’s grip.

The male victim held onto his legs as he tried to flee and they tussled until they were outside the house. The female victim opened a window and screamed, attracting neighbours who restrained Mampane and called the police, who arrested him.

The firearm was found to be a toy. The total value of the stolen items was estimated at R6 000, excluding the cost of the broken door.
