Ex-cops on corruption charge
ALEXANDRA – Former police officers on corruption charge out on bail.
Two former Alex police officers appeared at the Alex Magistrates’ Court on 17 May on charges of corruption.
The case was postponed and the two men were granted R3 000 bail each. Both men have apparently been dismissed from employment.
According to the charge sheet, the two men were arrested after they allegedly solicited a bribe of R2 000 from two scrap metal collectors in Wynberg last year.
They threatened to arrest them for illegally trading in metal unless they paid the bribe. They refused to accept an offer of R1 000 from the collectors and suggested that they should ask for the balance from the dealer.
One of the collectors went on foot to the dealer who informed other police officers who were checking second hand goods at the dealership. A trap was sent, and the collector was given marked money which he handed over to the suspects. They were arrested as they accepted the money.
