Female victims overpower robber

ALEXANDRA – Youth awaits sentencing for failed double robbery on same women.

A youth pleaded guilty on 21 June to armed robbery and was remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court pending sentencing.

Agusto Mafumo (20) was found guilty on two counts of armed robbery of two women he accosted on a path as they were on their way to work in Blue Hills, Midrand.

The first incident occurred mid-morning on 31 May as the women were crossing a veld. He approached them from the opposite direction and, at gunpoint, demanded their cellphones, passwords and purses.

As he was robbing them, the victims waved down a passing vehicle which stopped, forcing him to run away. The motorist chased him in the car, forcing Mafumo to drop the items which were recovered and handed over to the victims.

He was arrested when he attempted to rob the same victims at the same spot and time, on 7 June. This time, they had a male companion. When he ordered them to stop before producing a gun, they immediately pounced and overpowered him. One of the women took away the gun while the others held onto him.

Luckily, Metro police passing by on a patrol noticed the incident. They arrested and took Mafumo to the Midrand Police Station where he was processed.

In mitigation, he admitted to the first robbery and appealed for leniency as the weapon was a toy gun and all stolen items were recovered.
