Robbers target supermarkets
ALEXANDRA – Boxer robbed twice and Shoprite once in a week.
Robbers targeted two Alex supermarkets, Shoprite and Boxer, and fled with money and goods, after also robbing customers of their cellphones during the week ending 23 July.

Police spokesperson Captain Allie Kodisang said at 7.30pm on 18 July Shoprite on 1st Street in Wynberg was robbed of R8 000 in cash. A security guard patrolling outside the shop noticed five suspicious looking men outside. Three of them went inside and then came out after about 20 minutes. One of the men asked the guard if he was okay. When he said yes, the gang left and the guard went to the entrance of the shop which was closed. Police arrived as he was at the door and the shop attendant who was inside told him that they had been robbed by the gang.

Kodisang said Boxer Superstore on 1st Avenue was robbed twice. At 7.30pm on 19 July, a shop attendant who was loading drinks into a fridge was confronted by an armed man who searched him and allegedly took a cellphone from his pocket.
The suspect then forced the attendant to the tills where three other armed suspects were allegedly taking liquor from the shelves. They also allegedly took a cellphone and R300 in cash from a customer, before firing two shots into the air as they walked away. The goods taken by the robbers were valued at R1 850.

Two days later, at 6.30pm an armed gang of nine attacked the shop again. They allegedly pointed guns at the tellers and demanded cash. The gang members allegedly took R6 000 together with cigarettes worth R2 000. The suspects walked away without firing any shots.
No arrests have been made.
