Four raped, one sexually assaulted in six days
ALEXANDRA – Rapes shame Alex during Women's Month.
Four Alex women were allegedly raped, one sexually assaulted and two rape suspects arrested in the first six days of celebrating August as Women’s Month.
Alex Police Station spokesperson, Captain Allie Kodisang, said the first victim was allegedly raped several times from midnight on 1 August until the early morning by an unknown motorist.
The suspect approached the victim and a friend at the intersection of 17th and Rooth avenues. He greeted them before ordering them into the vehicle at knifepoint. As he drove off, the friend opened the door and escaped while the victim remained inside.
He later stopped on the roadside in Eastbank where he allegedly ordered her to undress and raped her in the vehicle without a condom.
He then drove to the Alex cemetery where he raped her again. Afterwards, he drove her to his friend’s flat on Alfred Nzo Avenue where he claimed she was his girlfriend before he raped her again in a bedroom.
When he was finished, she asked for food and he drove her to a 3rd Avenue food outlet where they shared a meal before she asked to be set free. He relented and she reported the incident to her boyfriend and the police.
The second rape victim was also allegedly robbed and her boyfriend assaulted at her home at 9pm on 2 August by four armed intruders who forced themselves in and demanded money. When the victims said they had none, the suspects hit the boyfriend on the head using the butt of a gun, switched on a kettle and threatened to pour boiling water over them.
One suspect ordered the victims to have sex.When they refused, he took condoms from a drawer, put one on and raped the woman on the bed. In the process, the suspects allegedly received a phone call from someone who urged them to find the money but there was none, and they left.
The third victim was allegedly raped at 3pm on 4 August in the old council building on 2nd Street, next to the Alex Magistrates’ Court. A male suspect proposed to her as she walked into the building. She refused and he ordered her at knifepoint into a dilapidated room with four men in it. He ordered her to undress and raped her twice in front of the men before letting her go.
The fourth rape allegedly occurred at 4.30am on 6 August in a room adjacent to a food and entertainment venue on 15th Avenue. The victim was left by two female friends in a room with a group of males. The lights in the room went off and one of the men known to the victim, allegedly raped her several times.
The sexual assault case occurred from late in the night on 5 August to early morning the next day. An armed motorist allegedly forced the victim into his vehicle which he drove to a secluded spot on 20th Avenue. There, he forced her to perform oral sex on him, claiming it would heal his erection problems caused by sleeping with an old woman. Also, he insulted her.
Afterwards, he drove to a 16th Avenue home where he asked for money from a woman and gave the victim R7 for taxi fare home.
The suspected rapists arrested on unspecified dates were to be further investigated to determine if and when they will appear in court.
