Hilson Park cricket coach wants to transform the sport

Highlands North – The schools are the main contributors to the transformation of sport.

Hilson Park Cricket Club coach David Mashiyi is calling on the Joburg east community to help transform the sport saying the club caters for all irrespective of colour, race or creed.

Mashiyi told North Eastern Tribune that the Highlands North-based cricket club catered for children of all ages.

He said Gauteng Cricket had hosted U13 provincial cricket trials at Queens High School in Bedfordview, and during the trials, parents watching tended to stick to their own racial groups which he said was not a good thing. “That resulted in hesitancy from children to engage with one another,” said Mashiyi.

“Transformation begins at home like every good thing in life. What I witnessed there from parents is what we don’t like to see happening in the sport.”

The Level 2 coach said they formed the club so that every child could play cricket. “We have also been engaging with parents to avoid making excuses and encourage their children to participate effectively.

“We have lots of children who’ve got talent but lack confidence and discipline for the sport and we want to rectify that through our club.

“Let’s all transform the sport on and off the field and then we can teach cricket unions how to transform the sport.”
