Two suspected robbers also charged with the possession of unlicensed firearms were remanded in custody by the Alex Magistrates’ Court pending a trial scheduled for 1 February next year.
They were part of a four-man armed gang which robbed a Cash Converters store at China Mall, Midrand on 3 October. They pounced on the staff who were taking in items which were displayed outside at the close of the day.
One suspect remained at the door while the others made the staff inside the store to lie on the floor. They assaulted the store manager, took the store’s keys and a wallet from him containing R1 200 and three cellphones from the other staff members.
Police officers were alerted to the robbery and arrested the two while their accomplices escaped. The guns used in the robbery were sent for ballistic testing.
