Operation Hloekisa behind schedule

ALEXANDRA - Operation Hloekisa fell behind schedule due to the community not playing its part.

Operation Hloekisa, the Greater Alexandra Clean-up Campaign which started at the beginning of August, is behind schedule but the City of Johannesburg is confident that it will finish on time.

The streets of Alexandra look cleaner, but the biggest challenge was compliance by the community as some streets such as 1st Avenue, which has already been cleaned, look like they did before the clean-up.

The campaign has focused on educating residents about littering and coordinator, Willy Lekoloane said the community was not playing its part in the clean-up. “We cannot do this alone. We need their help which is the main reason we also educating them on cleaning up,” Lekoloane said.

The total cost of the clean-up is not yet clear. “We have not yet figured the cost, we will see at the end of the clean-up,” said Lekoloane. Ward councillors have been playing their part in mobilising the community and encouraging them to keep their yards and streets clean.
