Woman evades jail

ALEXANDRA – Fraudster negotiates payback with bank.

An unemployed, single woman from Thembisa evaded jail time for fraud by negotiating repayment terms with a bank.

Mbali Madondo (27) was found guilty by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court of defrauding Capitec Bank of R100 000 loan applied for using fraudulent documents. She applied for and got it in July 2017 and was arrested on 10 October after the bank got suspicious following her failure to make repayments.

She was found to have supported her application with a fake payslip from a hospital and fake proof of an account from Nedbank. After initially denying the charge claiming ignorance of how the money was deposited into her account, Madondo relented, apologised before Magistrate Renier Boshoff and agreed to repayment terms with the support of a family member.

She paid a R10 000 deposit with subsequent monthly instalments of R7 000 to follow until the total amount is fully repaid.
