Alex girl awarded bursary to pursue electrical engineering
ALEXANDRA – Local girl receives a full bursary for an electrical engineering degree at Wits University.
An Alex girl and former Northview High School matriculant of the Class of 2017 is one of more than 100 youngsters awarded Sasol bursaries to pursue their chosen field of study at various tertiary institutions in the country.
Selaelo Modiboya Senyola, of East Bank in Alexandra, is set to study for a four-year BSc degree in electrical engineering at Wits University after she was one of the more than 100 chosen from a total of 500 applicants for bursaries.

The 18-year-old comes from a family in which education runs deep. She has taken after her father, Thabo, a quantity surveyor who runs his own company Thabo Senyolo & Partners, and who is also a firm believer that education opens doors to success.
To prove that education runs in the blood, Selaelo’s elder sister, Mosha, also a quantity surveyor from Wits and a former Northview High School matriculant, runs her own Kew-based quantity surveying company, Piloane Consulting Services.
Selaelo, who achieved high pass marks in her matric year, including two distinctions in physics and life sciences, has just returned home from a week-long orientation programme for all the bursary awardees at the Sasol Secunda plant in Mpumalanga.
“I initially wanted to do medicine but my dad advised me against it as it is now a saturated career choice, and urged me to take electrical engineering as there are few females that seem to want to pursue that career path,” she said.
She thanked her parents for believing in her and all the people who supported her during her school years, particularly a Mr Khumalo from Trac who introduced her to the Sasol bursary opportunity.

“I am where I am today because of all these people in my life,” added Selaelo, who started her primary school at her sister’s former school, Iphutheng.
Mosha is currently an ambassador for Northview High School where she motivates the youngsters to take their education seriously.
