Scores of Alexandra residents flocked into Sankopano Multi-Purpose Centre on Friday 18 May to have a face-to-face interaction and raise their concerns with officials of the City of Johannesburg.
The City’s Region E hosted its second round of an annual open day in which numerous City departments, entities, national governments and private institutions offered and exhibited their services to the residents.
Among those City departments and private institutions that exhibited their services on the day were the Office of the Speaker, Johannesburg Metro Police Department, Joburg Water, Emergency Management Services, Land Development and Planning, Social Development, Department of Health, Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, Pikitup, Johannesburg Road Agency, Road Accident Fund, Standard Bank and Richfield College.

According to Region E deputy director in the Department of Citizens Relations and Urban Management Fofo Pooe, the event is aimed at taking City officials to the people to share information and hear their concerns. “As civil servants in the City of Johannesburg, we have a responsibility and obligation to deliver services to our customers which happens to be our communities.
“We host open days so that we can share information and interact with residents, find out what troubles them when it comes to services that we offer them.”

Nancy Mosehla from 15th Avenue who attended the region’s annual open day for the first time said she was satisfied with information she received from the officials. “Now I know where to go to in case I need help with regard to social issues and house plans. Things were simply and clearly explained to me today.”
During the exhibitions, the health department provided screening services for blood pressure, diabetes, HIV, and cholesterol while Metro police and EMS were exhibiting and performing their drilling skills in the yard.
