Two year sentence for copper thief

ALEXANDRA – Benmore worker sentenced while accomplice denies copper theft.

 

The Alexandra Magistrates’ Court sentenced a man to two years’ imprisonment for theft of copper fragments from his workplace.

Onke Ngobese (29) admitted on 26 June before Magistrate Renier Boshoff assisted by state prosecutor Lufuno Maphiri to the crime which occurred at 6pm on 4 June at a construction site at Benmore Shopping Centre.

The incident reported in Alex News’ Alert guard nabs copper thieves, involved an accomplice, Siphosethu Qanqa, said not to have been an employee, who denied the charge and awaits trial.

A guard alerted to a spate of theft at the site searched and found the fragments on them as they left the premises. Police called to the scene arrested them when they failed to explain possession of the items.
