ALEXANDRA – Robber sentenced but victim loses valuables.
An Alex man was sentenced in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court to eight years’ imprisonment for armed robbery.
This after he was apprehended, beaten and handed over to the police by the community when the victim raised the alarm. Thabang Hlongwane (25) was apprehended about midday on 4 July after robbing a Somali national spaza owner. He and an accomplice, who is at large, went into the shop on Florence Mophosho Avenue when an Albany truck was delivering bread. They pointed a gun at the victim and forced him to lie down. They took R2 000 in cash from a till, a R1 000 airtime vouchers, R1 300 worth of cigarettes, a cell phone worth R4 000, his passport and asylum documents.
Hlongwane was found in possession of a gun. It wasn’t specified if any of the items were recovered.
