Man gets 3 years for possession of explosives

JOHANNESBURG – A 25-year-old suspect was convicted for being in possession of explosives.

A 25-year-old foreign national was found guilty of possession of explosives and was sentenced to three years imprisonment by the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.

Tawanda Mbira was sentenced on 27 July when he pleaded guilty and was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The spokesperson for Johannesburg Central Police Station, Captain Xoli Mbele said the suspect was arrested on 29 June at 10am at Wanderers Taxi Rank in the Joburg CBD. “The police saw a suspicious male carrying a white plastic bag. They stopped him and he dropped the plastic bag and ran away.

“The police gave chase and apprehended him. Inside the plastic bag were explosives, a Carmex connector, capped fuses and detonating cord.”

This conviction follows an arrest on 20 July of a woman with explosives used for ATM bombings and cash-in-transit heists by the Johannesburg Flying Squad.

“This good conviction is the result of diligent work done by the investigating officer. We hope this sentence will scare would-be offenders from committing the same crime.”
