A new chapter for Alex community
ALEXANDRA – Community members will have access to books 24/7.
The City of Johannesburg in partnership with Massmart South Africa has donated another library for the Alexandra community.
The City and the company had earlier this year donated a library structure made of steel which accommodates more than 500 books, to the people of the township.
The latest library also contains more than 500 books with a variety of genres including African fiction, general fiction, non-fiction, politics, entrepreneurship and motivational books by global business leaders.
Speaking at the handover ceremony at Three Square Community Sports Centre, Ziphezinhle Msimango of Massmart said the company had embarked on a war to bring back the culture of reading in communities.
“Massmart envisions libraries as centres for individuals to gather, learn, explore and interact. But more than anything else, this library is based on community and trust,” she said
“There is no staff policing you, no membership cards are issued or fines if one fails to return a book. You just take a book and return it when you are done.”
Harry Nakeng of the Community Development Department, Region E in the City of Johannesburg lauded Massmart for their initiative and called on all corporations to do the same in communities they operated in.
