Progress delights 20th Avenue residents

ALEXANDRA – Ward 105 councillor denies claims of his lack of action.

City of Johannesburg DA PR councillor Shadrack Mkhonto quickly responded when 20th Avenue residents came to him for help.

Mkhonto met with the residents on Saturday 20 July to give a report on progress made to their service delivery grievances. According to 20th Avenue community leader Themba Madonsela, the community turned to Mkhonto after their ward councillor, Tefo Raphadu, allegedly refused to meet them on several occasions.

“We’ve requested to meet with councillor Raphadu so that we could present our service delivery grievances to him several times, but he failed to pitch. We wanted potholes and lights fixed on our streets,” said Madonsela.

“We are grateful that our cries did not fall on deaf ears when we spoke to councillor Mkhonto. He delivered as we asked, the street was resurfaced, the lights were fixed and the drainage system unblocked.”

However, Ward 105 councillor Raphadu said he did not refuse to meet residents and has been communicating with community leaders since January this year. He said he knew about the service delivery issued and had reported them in January and later in May this year. “Emails have been sent to JRA [Johannesburg Roads Agency] and MMC [Nico] de Jager about the state of 20th Avenue. And councillor Mkhonto is using municipal resources [and is using his] achievement to campaign for the DA in our ward, which is wrong and uncalled for.”
