UPDATE: Petitioners get provincial govt’s ear
ALEXANDRA – Provincial govt commits to meet land claimants next week
Officials of the Gauteng Human Settlements Department met with Alex land claimants following their petition, at ANC headquarters Luthuli House.
The claimants, some who are octogenarians, expressed their anger over the 20 years’ delay in processing their land and property claims. Sam Mahatlane of the department said they were committed to resolving the matter. They will meet land rights organisations Alpoa and Apor and other key stakeholders on 14 August followed by a public meeting to give feedback to the community.
The commitment comes 18 months after the department and the city council had signed a statement of intent with the land rights organisations on the development and ownership options of the claimed land.
This amidst the current land expropriation debate that is intensifying before next year’s national general elections.
