Amaphiko Academy is looking for innovative change-makers in Alex for their incubation programme

JOBURG – Red Bull Amaphiko Academy is looking for creative minds in the social entrepreneurship space to be taken in for residency in their academy for further development.

As the world constantly experiences a myriad of social problems, it is in need of strong innovators to bring about changes and fresh solutions desired in its ever-changing digital era.

The 2019 Red Bull Amaphiko Academy, which will take place in Durban between 16 and 26 May next year, hopes to do just that.

Durban is one of South Africa’s biggest cities, and a hotbed of innovation and talent and is searching for new, innovative social change makers for next year and Alex’s own abundant creative minds are among the list of innovators being sought.

Applications to be part of the Amaphiko Academy opened on 1 October and will close on 31 November and innovators and social entrepreneurs with ideas and programmes that can help transform their communities are encouraged to apply.

The Academy gives a platform to entrepreneurs who use their skills, talents and energy to solve social problems and thereby transform their communities through sustainable, socially-minded, grassroots solutions to make a big impact. The Academy, which was launched in South Africa in 2014, has been home to over 50 participants over the past five years. It has expanded to another 20 countries around the world and next year will see four Red Bull Amaphiko Academies launch worldwide.

The Academy inspires and enables social entrepreneurs to make a difference by giving them access to networks, information, skills, opportunities and exposure. In this year’s programme, access included being able to tap into the knowledge of academic staff from the Wits University which runs the Tshimologong Centre in Braamfontein where this programme was hosted.

It also gives the entrepreneurs exposure to a broader international network of Amaphiko social entrepreneurs and various specialists and opens endless opportunities and gives the most memorable lessons in the journey of an entrepreneur.

One of those exposed to this myriad of support and development was Murendeni Mapfumo, Kusini Water co-founder and 2017 Red Bull Amaphiko graduate, who said the exposure was an eye-opener as it opened doors for him to a larger social network, with the ability that helped to expand the vision of his enterprise.

“Through this programme, I learnt that the calling to be a change-maker fulfils more than just the financial goal. It is for the greater good of humanity,” he said.

The Academy, which takes 16 social entrepreneurs per cycle, starts with a 10-day residency programme which is followed by 18 months of mentorship, coaching and expert guidance, helping entrepreneurs develop their enterprises and also sharpen their business acumen.
