Entrepreneurship a solution to the high rate of unemployment in South Africa
ALEXANDRA– 'If our government is serious about reducing the high rate of unemployment, they must invest in small township businesses.'
Alex resident Mthembeni Mkhatshwa (32) left his job in 2015 to start his small business in the township.
Mkhatshwa, who was working at a large furniture manufacturing company, left his job to start Zwide Unisex Hair Salon which is located on the corner of Ruth Street and 6th Avenue.
“While I was working at the office furniture manufacturing company, I realised that running your own business is far better than working for someone else,” he said.
“I couldn’t stand the pain of waiting for a certain date to have money… I decided to start my business of hairdressing which is something I love and do best.”
Mkhatshwa realised that if he started a business he would also be able to create job opportunities for others. “Right now I have two people that I work with who are able to put something on the table for their families which is something that every business person has in mind – to create jobs.
