Police rescue three men accused of stealing from an angry mob

ALEXANDRA – Police have warned community members about dangers of mob justice.

The Alexandra Police Station has implored community members not to take the law into their own hands.

This after the police rescued three men from an angry mob who accused them of stealing and terrorising the community in the area on 13 January.

According to Captain Stephen Malatjie, the spokesperson for the station, the police responded to a call from a concerned community member who saw a group of angry people armed with pangas and sticks roaming the street.

He said when police arrived at the scene, they found community members with a 28-year-old man who they accused of stealing in the area. Apparently, the man accused of the crime led the community members to two of his accomplices. They were found in possession of stolen goods and a large number of identity documents belonging to different people.

Malatjie said one of the suspects had a warrant of arrest pending against him. The police detained the three men at the station cells while further investigation was underway.
