Residents help robbed cop

ALEXANDRA – Malatjie lauds fruits of Alex crime summit.

Alexandra residents were commended by the Alexandra Police Station for living up to their pledge to partner with the police against criminals.

Police station spokesperson Captain Stephen Malatji said this in reference to a commitment made at a recent crime summit and following the apprehension of suspects who allegedly robbed an off-duty and unarmed police sergeant. Malatji said luckily, the victim wasn’t hurt in the incident which occurred in the daytime on 29 January in East Bank.

“Two men wielding a firearm and a knife robbed the officer of his cell phone and a wallet with undisclosed contents in full view of members of the public. No shots were fired,” Malatji said.

He added that the residents fulfilled their pledge by helping the victim and police investigators to arrest the culprits. “This indicates that we will prevail over criminals when we work together.”

The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
