Man blames theft charge on drugs
ALEXANDRA – Victim helps cops nab drug-addict thief.
The Alexandra Magistrates’ Court sentenced a drug addict to two years’ imprisonment for theft of a television set and juice.
Msinga, KwaZulu-Natal-born Denzel van der Merwe (20) admitted to the offence which occurred at a female victim’s home at midday on 28 December. She was away at the time of the incident. She suspected the accused and possible buyer and reported their names to the police. The buyer, a 54-year-old woman was approached and admitted to having bought the TV. She was arrested and identified Van der Merwe as the seller.
When approached, he admitted to stealing the TV for money to support his Tik drug habit and also, a two-litre container of juice. The TV was recovered and the woman was released. A social worker’s report confirmed his addiction during the sentencing.
