Fake cop syndicates dupe victims of stolen, hijacked vehicles
ALEXANDRA – Beware of fake cop syndicates charging for 'recovered' cars.
The Alexandra Police Station have warned residents not to pay money to police imposters who claim to have recovered their stolen or hijacked vehicles.
Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Malatji said there has been a spike of syndicates using this method to swindle victims. “The victim whose personal details would have been gathered by the criminals is contacted and told that their vehicle has been recovered by the police.
“They are given a fictitious police officer’s name and contact details. They are then asked, before collecting the vehicle, to pay an unspecified amount of money into a money market account for onward payment to an informer who would have assisted to recover their vehicle,” Malatji said adding that the victim only realises they have been duped when a voice message tells them that the number doesn’t exist.
