Update: School children sent home at primary school in Alex after parents vow to shut down school until MEC visits

ALEXANDRA – Parents vow to shut down school until they meet with MEC of Education in the province, Panyaza Lesufi due to allegations of corruption and tribalism at the school.


Update, 10 March, 11am:

School children from Ithute Primary School have been sent home amid parent protest calling for the school principal to be removed with immediate effect. The student governing body (SGB) will convene a meeting with the district of office at 2pm.

However, Sizeke Gcanga chairperson of SGB said they will only attend the meeting if the parents give them the mandate to do so.

Parents at Ithute Primary School in Alexandra have vowed to shut down the school until the MEC of Education in the province, Panyaza Lesufi, visits the school.

According to Siyanda Xabanisa, a member of the school governing body, they want the principal, who they accuse of alleged corruption, mismanagement and tribalism at the school, to be removed. Classes have been affected as teachers are unable to enter the school.

According to Xabanisa, parents took a decision to shut down the school at a meeting held on Saturday.

However, chaos erupted as parents are divided with the decision to shut down the school, with some calling for the protest to be called off.
