MMC for Development Planning Reuben Masango is concerned about illegal land use

JOBURG – The department said the contravention of City by-laws contributes to the significant derelict of buildings over the years.

The Department of Development Planning is concerned about the mushrooming of illegal land use and illegal buildings in the City of Johannesburg.

The department said the contravention of City by-laws contributes to the significant derelict of buildings and the general deterioration witnessed across Johannesburg over the years.

MMC for Development Planning Reuben Masango has emphasised the importance of compliance with building regulations and other City by-laws.

“The need for compliance is high up on the department’s list of priorities, as it ensures the safety of people who immediately occupy these buildings, which cannot be ignored under any circumstances,” said Masango.

He said the department has delegated a team of officials from the Land Use Development Management and Building Development Management Directorates to engage residents on issues relating to law enforcement.

“It is our belief that these engagements will inform members of the public on what is expected of them as residents and key stakeholders, and further allow the City to outline its by-laws, application processes, as well as legal processes around law enforcement.”
