Alexandra neighbouring suburbs not affected by total shut down strike

LOMBARDY EAST - Residents refuse to be addressed by MMC Michael Sun while Mayor Herman Mashaba claims he sympathises with them.

The effects of the Alexandra protests were not felt in the neighbouring suburbs according to Ward 81 councillor Irene Rugheimer.

The ward includes Bramley, Lombardy East and West, and River Park which all neighbour the township.

Residents of the township took to the streets on 3 April in what was labelled #AlexTotalShutDown in protest against the lack of service delivery and housing. The protesters burned tyres and blockaded roads with rocks.

Rugheimer said, “The damage seems to be only in Alexandra and not in our ward.”

Abey Mamaregane, the chairperson of Greater Lombardy East Residents Association (Glera) also confirmed that their suburb was not affected.

“We were pre-warned, so I believe everyone made alternative arrangements to go to work and school,” said Mamaregane.

The protesters demanded that mayor Herman Mashaba come and address them on the issues. MMC Micheal Sun visited the area but residents refused to be addressed by him.
