Thousands commemorate International Ort Day
HOUGHTON – Thousands showed up at the Ort organisation's International Day which took the form of a 21st-century skills-training session.
The largest Jewish educational organisation in the world held an annual celebration in Houghton. Thousands of Ort students and teachers around the world, including Ort in South Africa came together on 10 April to mark the establishment of the organisation in St Petersburg on this day in 1880.
International Ort Day was marked with celebrations spanning the globe. In this proud tradition, Ort SA in Johannesburg and Ort SA Education in Cape Town joined in with a variety of events throughout the day.
Ort SA CEO Ariellah Rosenberg said, “When celebrating a 139-year old organisation, you acknowledge its history, achievements and future. We stop everything once a year to have a party and honour our network, the opportunities it offers, and our togetherness.”
The 2018 agreement of affiliation signed between World Ort and the South African Board of Jewish Education opened many opportunities to King David learners. The recently inaugurated youth ambassadors of the Ort SA Youth Club at King David Victory Park and Linksfield high schools, allocated time on the day for connection, togetherness and celebration of the organisation which is passionate about making the world a better place through education.
Staff took part in a competition based on the history of the organisation, as well as eating Ort-branded snacks. Ort SA staff member, Lauri Kruger said, “I am proud to be part of an organisation that has been around for a whopping 139 years, impacting thousands of lives around the world during these decades. Today, we continue to educate, keep up with changing times and believe in every person that steps foot through our doors.”
Hundreds of images were posted on social media using the hashtag ORTtogether hand gesture.
The evening celebration took the form of a 21st century skills training session on how to become a digital influencer. These kinds of talks fall under the Ort SA CareerHub.
