Foetus found in Jukskei river

ALEXANDRA - An abandoned foetus was found in a river on the morning of 16 September.

A foetus was found in the Jukskei River near the John Brand bridge by a group of women on the morning of 16 September.

The foetus was found by Tinyiko Maluleke of the Shomang Sebenzani Development Initiative, who was cleaning up the river. “I was cleaning when I saw it and immediately alerted the other workers,” Maluleke said. Police and the emergency services were also called to the scene.

Investigating Officer on the scene Takalani Joseph Phophi said that a case of consignment of birth would be opened. He said, “Once the docket is opened we shall start investigating and also look for the mother.” The age of the foetus was not clear and a pathologist would need to conduct an investigation.

According to the women from the initiative – who work at the river daily – this was not the first foetus to be found in the river. Maluleke said that eight foetuses were found in the river this year alone.
