Jeppe police warns ATM users of scammers
JEPPE – According to the police, the suspects pretend to assist customers while they, in fact, swap their bank card.
Jeppe police are searching for two suspected scammers captured on a webcam at an ATM and are warning customers to always apply caution when withdrawing money.
According to the spokesperson for the Jeppe police, Captain Richard Munyayi, there have been cases reported of criminals robbing people of their cards at an ATM in their policing precinct.
He explained that the perpetrators pretend to assist someone while they withdraw money and somehow along the way, they manage to swap the cards. “The victims will get another card looking exactly like theirs and will be told there is a problem with it or there is no money inside the ATM.
“They [customers] will take the card and only realise later that they have been scammed when they receive an SMS notifying them that money has been withdrawn from their accounts – either at the same ATM where the suspects were assisting them or another ATM somewhere nearby.”
Jeppe police are asking the community to be more vigilant with their bank cards when withdrawing money from ATMs. “We are appealing to anyone who might recognise the men captured on a webcam at an FNB ATM machine at SPAR Bertrams to contact the police. We are also appealing to the victims of these scammers to come forward and report the matter to the police.”
