Taxi driver in ‘road rage’ incident due in court
ALEXANDRA – Taxi driver shoots women in 'road rage' incident.
Two women were critically wounded from gun shots and rushed to a hospital for treatment after a suspected road rage-related incident in Alex.
Alex police spokesperson Captain Stephen Malatji said the suspect, a taxi driver who abandoned his vehicle at the scene, was arrested in nearby shacks.
The incident occurred at about 10.45am on 30 July near the intersection of Alfred Nzo and 3rd avenues.
“The 47- and 51-year-old victims were shot in their upper shoulders at close range by the suspect using a licensed firearm. They were rushed to the Alexandra Community Health Care Centre in critical condition,” Malatji said.
He added that the victims’ and suspect’s vehicles had apparently been following each other for some distance until the incident he said was suspected to have resulted from aggressive and reckless driving.
“Residents helped to find the suspect in a nearby shack where he was arrested and his licensed gun confiscated. He is pending court appearance.”
Malatji commended the residents saying he was encouraged and hoped others countrywide will emulate their cooperation with the police in rooting out crime.
