Awaiting trial youth sentenced for previous botched hijacking

ALEXANDRA – Youth's criminal trend gets him 10 years jail pending other sentencing.

A 20-year-old man was recently sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for attempted hijacking of a motor vehicle and possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition committed in 2016.

Tsietsi Mametsa, who was 18 years old at the time, was arrested after he and an accomplice, who is still at large, were involved in a botched motor vehicle hijacking at the intersection of 13th Avenue and Vincent Tshabalala Road.

Police heard gunshots and were directed by the public to the scene. The two fled when they saw the police officers approaching. Mametsa was apprehended and found with a gunshot injury on the leg. The victim of the attempted hijacking allegedly disappeared after shooting Mametsa.

After his arrest and while awaiting trial, Mametsa was granted bail. While out on bail, he commited a robbery but was never arrested. However, during the recent court proceedings and sentencing, someone in court recognised him as the suspected robber, police were informed and he was promptly arrested in court.

He is currently serving his 10 years’ jail time while awaiting trial in connection with the robbery.
