Previous jailbird sentenced again
ALEXANDRA – Victims bring robber to justice
A man with a record of previous convictions was sentenced by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court to 15 years’ imprisonment for armed robbery.
Forty-year-old Thabo Mabunda was convicted for the incident which occurred in the afternoon of 10 June at the robot-controlled intersection of Vincent Tshabalala Road and 13th Avenue, which has become a notorious hijacking hotspot.
He and other accomplices, who are still at large, attacked a motorist in a Honda Civic with three passengers who had their windows open. They demanded cell phones, wallets, bracelets and watches.
One suspect grabbed the driver’s phone and bracelet and all of the suspects ran away. The victims gave chase and apprehended the accused who was found with nothing. Police were called and he was arrested. His previous convictions dating back to 1998 are for malicious damage to property, robbery, housebreaking and theft which were considered as aggravating factors during sentencing.
