Teen’s wayward acts scar him for life
ALEXANDRA – Offending youth gets more than what he bargained for.
A teenager who will be scarred for life from injuries sustained in the commission of a crime was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment.
Banele Mandi (19) was sentenced by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court after he pleaded guilty to the charge of possessing a firearm without a licence. He was apprehended mid-day on 6 October by members of the public next to a notorious hotspot at the intersection of 13th Avenue and Vincent Tshabalala Road. Police called to the scene found him encircled, holding a gun and bloodied from injuries on the head and all over the body.
He seemingly had been beaten up, scalded with hot oil from food sellers who operate at the spot and had been bumped by a motorist he allegedly tried to hijack with a colleague who escaped.
He was taken by ambulance for treatment at a hospital under police guard and appeared in court after recuperating.
