South Africans urged to reduce water consumption
JOBURG – The provincial water storage in Gauteng is over 95 per cent however the Vaal Dam capacity at just 50 per cent.
The Department of Water and Sanitation said the recent dam report shows that some parts of the country were yet to recover from the devastating drought experienced in 2014.
The department’s figure of national water storage is continuing to dwindle at a low of 59.2 per cent compared to 64.1 per cent during the same period in 2019.
Minister Lindiwe Sisulu of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation has instructed acting director-general Mbulelo Tshangana to source more funds to effectively deal with water challenges in some provinces.
The department is pleased with the provincial water storage in Gauteng which is at 99.2 per cent. The Vaal Dam is at 50.6 per cent, a sharp decline from 74.6 per cent during the same period in 2019.
Sisulu has emphasised the country was a water-scarce country and that we needed to reduce the manner in which we consumed water and save as much water as possible.
