Alex women take to the streets to voice out their right to walk freely in the streets at night

ALEXANDRA – Mazibuko encouraged men to come to the party and take a stance against women abuse in society.

Women in Alexandra sent a strong message to those robbing women of their right to walk on the local streets at night.

This was after scores of women recently embarked on a night march in the township that was organised by the Department for Community Safety to claim women’s right to walk at night.

The march was led by MEC for Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko and Chair of chairs in the provincial legislature Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, and was themed Reclaiming the night.

Addressing community members before embarking on the march which started in Alexandra Stadium, Mazibuko said the purpose of the event was to stamp women’s authority and send a strong message that women have the right to walk on the streets at any time without fear.

She also encouraged men to come to the party and be at the forefront of the fight against the abuse of women in society.

“Today we are going to embark in a march called Reclaiming the night, as women,” said Mazibuko. “We will go to all these places where women have been deprived of their right to walk at night. We also encourage men of Alexandra to join us in this fight against women abuse. Tonight we are claiming our right as women to walk freely and without fear at night.”

Mazibuko added that her department would continue working closely with all formations in society, including faith-based and non-governmental organisations to curb the scourge of gender-based violence across the province.
