ALEXANDRA–Woman stabbed for refusing a man's advances
A married man who stabbed a woman and threatened to burn down her shack was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment or a R3 000 fine.
Lonwabo Mdetshi (27) of 2nd Avenue who pleaded guilty, was sentenced in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for assaulting his victim with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm in September last year. An additional sentence of 36 months was wholly suspended for five years.
He went to the woman’s home at midnight and knocked on the door while she and a friend were asleep. The friend alerted the victim to the loud knock and when she asked who it was, the accused said it was Ayanda. She refused to open for him and the accused threatened to burn down the shack. Scared, she unlocked the door and the man forced his way inside at knifepoint and attacked her.
She defended herself with a pillow but he stabbed her in the chest and hands as he went for her face. The accused stopped the attack when he received a call. The victim who was bleeding requested to be taken to a clinic and he accompanied her and her friend, still threatening her with the knife.
He returned with them after the treatment and apologised and begged the victim not to report him to the police as he has children who would starve if he was arrested. When asked why he stabbed her, the accused blamed her for rejecting him.
Before he left, he threatened the woman should she report him to the police. The victim did report him leading to his arrest.
