Committee goes beyond its education mandate

ALEXANDRA – Saturday school learners prepare in advance for lockdown time.

The Alexandra Education Committee stretched beyond its education mandate to help its bursary recipients’ prepare for the coronavirus.

The agency, which supports learners from Alexandra through Saturday school tutorials at Waverley Girls’ High School, geared up for this task before the national 21-day lockdown was announced.

Alumni coordinator Joy Mhlongo said the current bursars were prepared and educated about this pandemic. “Bins, sanitisers and anti-bacterial items were dispensed in all bathrooms at the school,” Mhlongo said.

“Posters of hygiene, virus symptoms and its prevention were put up in classrooms, bathrooms and in the offices to increase awareness about the virus.”

She added that the assembly before classes stressed how they should wash their hands with soap for at least 20 seconds. “When in doubt, they should do so while singing ‘happy birthday to you’ three times which equates with the required washing time.”

The exercise was also supported by the agency’s director, Paul Channon, who stressed the importance of hygiene and washing hands regularly. This was while some of the learners were wished well and preparedness for the virus as they collected their liquid handwash and sanitisers at the Alexandra Police Station.
