It’s a dog’s day in Alex

ALEXANDRA - Community embraces the Dog Day held in Alexandra's Pholosho Junior Secondary School.

A record number of dogs were dewormed, inoculated and washed during a campaign at Alexandra’s Pholosho Junior Secondary School.

The day was organised by Women and Men Against Child Abuse, which said the idea behind the campaign was that if children could learn to care for their pets, it would instil a culture of caring for each other.

“We managed to deworm, inoculate and wash 280 dogs,” said spokesperson Miranda Jordan-Friedmann. “It was a mammoth task on a very hot day. “We are extremely grateful to the SPCA for their ongoing partnership for the last two years as they managed all the deworming and inoculation of the dogs.”

She thanked all the volunteers who assisted with registration, washing of the dogs, handing out snacks, dog food, leads and collars. Jordan-Friedmann said the aim of the programme was to ultimately create animal ambassadors and representatives in order to educate the community on the basic needs of animals. “Our programme teaches and encourages love and respect in children for animals. Compassion and empathy is vital for preventing all cruelty and so we have designed extramural workshops to encourage children to treat others and their environment with care, compassion and respect.”

Clinic manager at the Alexandra Kidz Clinic, Elizabeth Mokoena reported a decline in organised dog fights in Alex since the introduction of the programme.
