Covid-19: Relief keeps coming for vulnerable during lockdown
ALEXANDRA – Children, vulnerable's desperation partially alleviated during lockdown.
Poor families in Alex whose children rely on the school feeding scheme had their desperation eased through a donation of food parcels as the national lockdown continues.
“They were left in dire straits when the schools were also closed,” said Ward 105 councillor Teffo Raphadu who commended the donation from Tiger Brands which supports 16 000 needy children under the scheme in the province.
Raphada distributed the food parcels through local non-profit organisations Ratang Bana which received 180 packs, Friends for Life (110), Alexandra Child Care Support Centre (55) and Fundza Lushaka (120).
Raphadu also received additional support for other needy families in the ward from unidentified well-wishers who responded to his appeal for help through Facebook. “They donated 100 food parcels to nourish vulnerable families trapped by poverty and also conditions of the lockdown,” Raphadu said, adding that the appeal was part of a councillor’s responsibility at a time when everyone has been impacted by the crisis.

“As community leaders, we are charged with ensuring that the vulnerable in particular, survive debilitating conditions in normal times and the current scourge, and to help the police control queues of people purchasing food at supermarkets, the elderly receiving grants at pay points, and to sustain awareness education to mitigate the spread of the virus.”
He also thanked African Medallion group for its donation of food parcels to orphaned and vulnerable children as well as people living with disabilities. “They heeded the president’s ‘fight Covid-19’ call and are part of the change we all want to see.”
