Mass meeting on Alex land issues
ALEXANDRA - Government proposes to restore title deeds to 120 properties in the township but Alpoa is not impressed.
Although 120 Alexandra property owners have been promised title deeds, Alexandra Land and Property Owners Association members are not holding their breaths.
This after a meeting was held in Sandton to discuss the issuing of title deeds to members of the association. Representatives of the department of human settlements, the City of Johannesburg, Johannesburg Property Company and the association were present at the meeting.
“We are highly suspicious about this but we will see when we cross that bridge,” said secretary general of the association, Jacky Segopa.
“There’s nothing to be excited about but should that happen it will be a step in the right direction,” said secretary general of the association, Jacky Segopa.
This meeting was part of an ongoing discussion about land which was taken away from the association’s members during the apartheid era. About 2 553 properties were seized and claims were lodged between 1995 and 1998. Property owners were offered R50 000 which was alleged to be compensation for their land and more than 380 of those who lodged claims did not accept the money.
“They want their land back,” Segopa said. He said those who accepted the money lost the rights to their land. “The 380 people and those who accepted the
R50 000 have since instituted a land claims court case that they want their land back.”
The journey continues as the association and its members will hold a meeting on 30 November at the Roman Catholic Church school hall to discuss the way forward.
