Pupil’s hard work pays off

ALEXANDRA - Mendy Mabena, who got six matric distinctions, will be studying Charted Accountancy at Wits University.

Former Liberty Community School pupil Mendy Mabena has reaped the rewards of her hard work and dedication.

The 18-year-old, who received six distinctions in matric, will be studying chartered accountancy at Wits University and will be one step closer to achieving her ultimate dream – building her mother a house.

“I am very happy and excited. I worked really hard and sacrificed my sleep because I knew what I wanted,” Mabena said. She said her mother, who is a domestic worker, was elated when she heard the great news.

Mabena, who received distinctions in maths, accounting, economics, business studies, life orientation and isiZulu, will be the first person in her family to go to university and will be studying through a bursary.

“My mother is the only working person in the family. I want her to stop working and I will take care of her and the rest of my family. I’m going to work hard and focus on my studies so that I can buy her a house one day.”

The bright young woman believes that education is important and that through it she can achieve anything. “I want to take my family out of Alex and I want my sister’s child to go to a good school,” Mabena said.
