A brand new gym for clinic
ALEXANDRA - Discovery Vitality has come to the rescue of the Alex Clinic with a brand new gym.
The 80-year-old clinic with its 200 strong staff provides medical care to more than 30 000 people per month, took receipt of a brand new outdoor gym.
The gym is designed to counter challenges presented by non-communicable and lifestyle illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, epilepsy, and high blood pressure.
“We are experiencing an increase in the number of these lifestyle diseases among Africans, unlike in the past,” said clinic CEO Labane Maluleke. “This is caused by their inactive lives and poor, unbalanced diets. These diseases can be silent killers if we do not change our way of life through improved diets, maintenance of appropriate body weight and most importantly regular exercise.
“The gym is a welcome addition to our services. It will be used by patients in rehabilitative care, community members and our staff.”
The donation of the gym was made by Discovery. CEO of the company, Gidon Novick said, “The gym will tackle the problem of obesity which affects worker productivity negatively and also contribute to the wellness of society in general. We will help the clinic train a person to operate the equipment and avoid its misuse.”
He said the equipment was made of local solid material, required minimal maintenance and could be used by anyone regardless of size and weight.
