Kick-off of Sasol Women’s League delayed

ALEXANDRA - The kick-off for the premier Sasol Women League has been delayed due to the camp being held for Banyana Banyana.

The kick-off for the premier Sasol Women League has been delayed due to the Banyana Banyana camp.

The premier league of women’s football had been set to kick-off over the past weekend and Alexandra’s representative in the elite league, Bluebirds Football Club had been scheduled to meet Halelujah Zebra Force in the league opener at the Altrek Stadium on 23 march.

The South African Football Association later informed the clubs involved that all matches of the Sasol Women League had been postponed due to the Banyana camp. “We are not sure whether the football association will decide to start with the same game or games or will decide to skip these and play them later,” said Bluebirds coach Malvin Khumalo.

Due to the cancelled fixture, Khumalo organised a friendly between his senior side and the development side as a means to gauge his players.

The senior team beat the juniors 4-0 in a thrilling but one-sided match. The senior team was without the services of top striker Zingawe Phakathi who was called up to the Banyana camp.

Khumalo said he was worried about the absence of some players due to work, school and other commitments. “This has made our maiden preparations for the new league difficult as most of our players are either at school, varsity or at work,” he said.

“If I can get the core of the players we had last year, I am sure we would make an impact in the new league. For the first two seasons, we are looking at finishing in the top eight and then only in 2018 we shall start challenging for honours.”
