Alex residents to discuss land rights
ALEXANDRA - Land and property rights activists in Alexandra have called for a general meeting on 13 April to be held at the Motsweding Centre in Wynberg.
Land and property rights activists in Alexandra have called for a general meeting to be held at the Motsweding Centre in Wynberg on 13 April.
Secretary general of the Alexandra Land and Property Owners Association (Alpoa) Jacky Segopa said the aim of the meeting is to inform members about the developments so far, in their negotiations with government over the restoration of title deeds and property rights in Alexandra.
The meeting is scheduled to take place at the Motsweding Centre, at the corner of Vincent Tshabalala Road (formerly London Road) and 2nd Street in Wynberg, just a few paces from the Alex Clinic and next to the Sasol garage, at 9am.
The agenda will include among other things, options offered by government in terms of the land and property rights restorations. “We are going to table at this meeting the options offered by government and ask the members to ratify or reject them,” explained the secretary general.
Segopa argued that they need a clear mandate from members and whether they accept or reject the proposed options of settling the long standing question of land and property rights in Alexandra. He said “Once that is done, members will mandate us whether we should sign the memorandum of understanding between Alpoa, the City of Johannesburg and the Gauteng Department of Local Government and Housing.”
Segopa urged members of his association to come in their numbers to the meeting to ratify or reject what he considers to be a milestone in the struggle for the land and property rights in Alexandra.
