Three days of health promotion by Rotarians
ALEXANDRA - The Johannesburg Main Reef Rotary club has extended its charitable services to Alexandra.
It launched a three-day Rotary Family Health Days Campaign on 2 April at African Children’s Feeding Scheme, Malebese, at 68, 11th Avenue.
The campaign started last year at various sites in the country and was accessed by 65 000 people. It is now planned as an annual event and was held at 142 other sites and conducted by 225 Rotarians from 4 000 clubs nationally.
Because of last year’s success, Rotary is also planning to take the campaign to Lesotho, Swaziland, Uganda, Nigeria and Ghana.
Geff Geffroy, Reef Rotary President said the event was a collaboration of the club with civil society organisations, business and government. “Its aim is to promote family health by creating awareness of HIV/AIDS, TB and non-communicable diseases, and also conducts HIV testing and counselling, TB [testing], diabetes and blood pressure screening, polio and measles vaccinations and de-worming, and offers vitamin A,” he said.
“We facilitate the input of these services and expect 3 000 people in Alexandra to have accessed these services from different participating NGOs and government departments in three days.”
At the end, the club will compile statistics for analysis and submission to the Department of Health to help improve strategies for promoting family health.
The occasion will also be an opportunity for different clubs nationally to explore partnerships with local NGOs for other projects. The Johannesburg Main Reef Club will focus on strengthening its partnership with Malebese, who hosted the programme, and would also adopt Leratong Orphanage and Creche.
