A new initiative to re-brand Alex

ALEXANDRA - A new locally bred initiative to re-brand the township of Alexandra has been launched.

The Black Rose Academy, together with Gauteng High Schools Ambassadors, has started an initiative that will see the re-branding of the name of Alexandra through theatre, dance, music and other activities designed to take the children off the streets and out of mischief.

Auditions to select prospective participants in the various stage and arts activities will be held on 10 May at Realogile High School from 9am until 5pm.

The audition categories include modeling, dance in its various forms (like bujwa, pantsula and traditional dance), drama, debate or future leaders, poetry, music (any kind of music), DJing, art (drawing or designers), and soccer players who will be part of Black Rose Football Club. The players should between the ages of 10 and 22.

“Our desire is to move all the children [off the] streets [and] to put more focus on education, including social activities. We hope this will reduce the tendency by children and the youth to fall prey to drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, high failure rate at school, and alcohol abuse.

“We also encourage our parents to support Black Rose Academy by allowing their children to be part of us so that we can join hands in re-branding the name of Alexandra to become the best in all the townships in South Africa,” said Black Rose Academy CEO Marks Bernards.

Bernards said the vision for Alexandra is to create more opportunities, have more celebrities visiting and motivating the youth, and to change the negative word of mouth which tends to paint Alexandra in a bad light.

“We have started campaigns in various parts of Alex to spread the good name of Alexandra, as we believe by doing so, our grandfathers, grandmothers, fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, community and the various institutions such as schools, shops, newspapers and radio stations will join hands and support us to re-brand Alexandra,” Bernards said.

He also called on other organisations in Alexandra to come forward and join the movement to re-brand the township.

“We have also started the Alexandra Modelling Academy which we hope will be the pillar of this re-branding exercise by hosting events in Alex,” he added. Black Rose Children Trust Fund has been formed to help all needy children in Alexandra with food, clothes and free education bursaries.
