Ward 81 residents invited to discuss new housing scheme

Residents of Ward 81 are invited to a public meeting for an update on a new housing in Lombardy East

Residents of Ward 81 are invited to a public meeting for an update on a new housing project in Lombardy East.

The ward is comprised of Lombardy East and West, River Park, Kew, Bramleyview and Lyndhurst.

The meeting will be convened by councillor Mokgadi Radebe on 12 May at corner of Shakespeare and Victoria Streets, Lombardy East.

Councillor Radebe said the meeting was to get communities’ input on the city council’s housing development programme and strategies to curb illegal dumping in their area. “In previous meetings some residents were concerned of possible depreciation of values of their properties if the new houses were of poor and low quality.

“Although the new houses will be low cost and affordable to lower income earners, they will not be the RDP type, but three to four storey structures of substantive quality to contribute to social cohesion of our society,” she said.

The project is estimated to cost about R200 million and will be managed by the Joburg Social Housing Company through public tender. There will be 512 units – 154 of them with one bedroom, living room, lounge, bathroom and kitchen, and 360 two bedroom units of similar design. The target date for completion is 2018.

“The planned location of the project is a current site for illegal dumping and hide out for criminals who terrorise River Park and Lombardy East residents,” she added.

Meanwhile, Radebe lamented the slow implementation of maintenance programmes by the city council, especially grass cutting and the repair of potholes. She said the Joburg Roads Agency was unnecessarily delaying its plan to re-surface and fix storm water drains on the badly potholed section of Vincent Tshabalala road between 5th and 8th Avenues. “This road connects NI with M1 and is a key arterial route for the city and the province’s economy as it links the East Rand and OR Tambo Airport with Sandton and Joburg CBD. The delay is obviously impacting negatively on the growth of the province’s economy,” she stressed.
