ALEXANDRA - A case of fraud has been opened at the Alexandra Police Station by a Soweto woman who lost her ID book in 2011.

A case of fraud has been opened at the Alexandra Police Station by a Soweto woman who lost her ID book in 2011.

According to Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, the opening of the case was the result of numerous calls received by the the woman from a furniture shop, wanting to know why she was not paying her account.

The victim claimed she initially ignored the calls from the store as she had not opened an account with them but due to their persistence, she finally went to see the store manager to explain that she never opened an account with the branch.

She was shocked when the store, which is located on the corner of 3rd and Watts streets in Wynberg, produced a copy made from her ID book, but with a fraudulent picture attached to it. According to police, she then explained to the store manager that she had lost her ID book in 2011, applied and obtained a new one in 2012, but only started receiving calls from the store in 2013.

Following the advice of the store manager, she went straight to the Alexandra Police Station and opened a case of fraud. Maphakela said the police were still investigating.
