Charities dress children for winter
ALEXANDRA - Some school children in Alexandra will be enjoying their winter school holidays in warm clothing donated by a well wisher.
Some schoolchildren in Alexandra are enjoying their winter school holidays in warm clothing donated by a well-wisher.
The donor from a private school in Pretoria donated 100 jackets which were distributed to 12 to 16 year olds at Nobuhle hostel through two non-profit organisations, Sakhisizwe and Blessed Is The Hand That Giveth.
The occasion was marked with a non-denominational sermon for the children who were also treated to some goodies and drink from a local wholesaler.
Co-ordinator Phillemon Matome said this was the second such event and hoped it could be held annually to help keep children warm. He also said they wanted to start a computer programme for children, and aimed to provide mentoring and monitoring to those with behavioural problems to improve their school performance and general conduct in society.
Pastor Sibongiseni Ntombela of the African Gospel Church said the donation and sermon would motivate and uplift the children’s spirits so that they could value the importance of living spiritually and being good members of society. He added that last year jerseys and socks were donated and he appealed for more donations to support the children.
Local leader Ernest Langa also requested more assistance as the number of needy children increased annually.
