ALEXANDRA - The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa's (NUMSA) strike over wages also spread to the industrial streets of Wynberg and Alexandra.
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa’s strike over wages spread to the industrial streets of Wynberg and Alexandra.
The strike enters its second week and the union has vowed to continue their action indefinitely. On 4 July strikers gathered at the corner of 5th street, Wynberg before proceeding eastwards on Andries Street accompanied by police.
They maintained their stance for a 15 percent wage increase and found the 10 percent reportedly offered by employers to be unacceptable.

They demanded that workers who had reported for duty at several companies to join the action as it was in their interest to seek a living wage.
Over the weekend, the union’s general secretary, Irvin Jim reiterated the wage increase demand urging the members to conduct their action in a disciplined manner and avoid infiltration by those wanting to discredit their cause.
